Technology can help us see the signs they can’t explain.

VetBearings is building tools that transform movement and behavioral data into information veterinarians and caregivers can understand and act on.

Introducing GaitGauge

A patented wearable that delivers an accurate, objective gait assessment in minutes.

The problem isn’t how much you care. It’s how little of their pain you can see.

GaitGauge establishes your dog’s baseline, then tracks it — flagging subtle, early-stage lameness before it's visible, and then showing whether an intervention is actually working.

Early detection. Objective monitoring.
Better for both ends of the leash.

About Our Founder

Dean Filipowicz, DVM, MS, MBA, DACVS, went from mechanical engineer in Philadelphia to commodity options trader in New York to board-certified veterinary surgeon in the San Francisco Bay Area. That's not the most logical progression, unless you're building veterinary technology. He founded Veterinary Bearings to take the friction out of pet care, improving the experience at both ends of the leash.

In more than two decades in veterinary medicine, Dean has built and exited two companies. His mobile surgical practice, West Coast Veterinary Surgery, merged into United Veterinary Specialty & Emergency. As United's largest shareholder and its Medical and Hospital Director, he grew it to three hospitals and more than 90 people before its acquisition by MedVet. Today, he runs Bay West Veterinary Surgery and its Elevated Vet mobile surgical service.

A solo founder, not a solo effort

Getting GaitGauge, Vet Bearings' first product, to a working prototype has meant leading a team without a single employee. Dean has worked hands-on with product-development firms and independent designers, directed a data scientist and marketing partners, and designed and helped run a validation study in collaboration with UC Davis.

One Product Is Just the Beginning.

GaitGauge begins with dogs, but the vision behind VetBearings goes much further. We’re building a technology platform with the potential to support better understanding of movement and health across different animals, environments, and stages of life.

What is Gauge and how does it work?

Gauge is a patented wearable device designed to objectively measure pain in dogs by analyzing force distribution while they move. It helps detect lameness before it becomes visible, providing earlier and more reliable insights.

Is Gauge available for purchase?

Not yet. Gauge is currently in the prototype stage and is being refined through research and development. Our focus is on validating the technology while preparing for future commercial availability.

Who is this project designed for?

The current platform is built for investors, accelerators, research partners, and early adopters interested in the future of veterinary technology. It's an opportunity to follow the project's progress and join its early community.

HOW ACCURATE IS GAUGE?

Gauge is being developed using advanced force analysis and continuous research to ensure reliable pain detection. The device is currently undergoing validation and testing before commercial release.

HOW CAN I FOLLOW THE PROJECT'S PROGRESS?

You can stay updated by following our official channels and announcements. We regularly share development milestones, research updates, and important news about Gauge's journey.

WHAT MAKES GAUGE DIFFERENT FROM TRADITIONAL ASSESSMENTS?

Unlike subjective pain evaluations, Gauge uses measurable force distribution data to provide objective insights. This helps identify lameness earlier and supports more informed veterinary decisions.
